Celebrating Women In Construction Week and International Women’s Day – Meet Aqsa Mahmood
7th March 2023
My colleagues at Glencar construction were extremely welcoming and supportive of my aspirations in my job role. I am given constant support and praise, which inspires me.

Why do you think it is important to celebrate International Women’s Day?
I believe celebrating International Women’s day is important as it gives us the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of inspirational women amongst us today, and those who have sadly left us. Women who have broken down many barriers and accomplished great things in lots of fields. The day gives us the chance to celebrate those achievements and unite for equality for women in society.
Why did you choose a career in the construction industry?
I chose a career in construction because I realised this industry is extremely varied with opportunities for everyone. Construction always amazed me from a young age. With a keen interest in arts and graphics I gravitated towards studying Architecture, which seemed to fit my interest. I was able to develop my creative skills and construction knowledge throughout my studies which opened many opportunities for me in this industry.
Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman?
During my career, I have experienced a general lack of encouragement in pursuing my goals in the industry. With construction being male dominated – I was warned it would be somewhere I would struggle to fit in and with a rise in work demand overall, there would be a lack of flexibility.
If so, how did you overcome them and how was Glencar Construction able to support you?
My colleagues at Glencar construction were extremely welcoming and supportive of my aspirations in my job role. I am given constant support and praise, which inspires me to work harder towards my end goals and professional development.
My maternity leave recently came to an end and Glencar Construction offered flexibility with my working hours and days which supported my work-life balance. This allowed me to fulfil my parental responsibilities and work on my career development, which I am so grateful for.
How can we encourage more women to pursue a career in construction?
Creating a welcoming work environment and offering mentoring/apprenticeships and training will encourage more women to pursue a career in construction.
Educating the younger generation will also help make them aware of the opportunities that are available to them in the industry and will give them options moving forward in their careers.
What is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?
Whatever you wish to do in life, believe in your abilities and strive for what you want. We all have obstacles in our journey, but they are essential for learning and growing. Give 100%, try your best and success will follow – you’ve got this!
Is there anyone who has inspired you throughout your career?
My parents are my biggest inspiration. They have always supported and encouraged my decisions whilst motivating me to keep going, even when things got tough. They’ve taught me to have faith in myself, and inspire me to be a strong, independent women.
What is the most important piece of advice you have been given in terms of your career?
Always believe in yourself and trust your instincts!
Why do you think equity and diversity in the workplace is so important?
I believe equity and diversity is important in a workplace as it keeps people motivated and encourages productivity, in turn making the company more successful. It also ensures everyone has the same opportunities and treatment, creating a comfortable work environment.
If you could have lunch with three inspirational women, dead or alive, who would they be and why?
Three women I would really love to meet, dead or alive, would be:
Arfa Karim: a Pakistani computer scientist who became the youngest Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) in 2004 and was submitted to the Guiness Book of World Records for her achievements. Her intellect, confidence, and curiosity at such a young age inspires me the most!
Rosa Parks: an American activist in the civil rights movement, who stood up for what she believed in and showed great courage that changed the lives of so many.
Khadija (RA): the wife of the Prophet (SAW) who is an inspiration to many, especially in the Islamic community. She was a businesswoman; earned her own money and was very respected in her community.
