Glencar has today announced its appointment as the main contractor for the design and build of a landmark 158,904 sq ft warehouse and 5,000 sq ft timber-framed office at Grandidges Quay, Birkenhead, for long term, valued client and repeat partner Peel Ports Group. The project is being delivered in collaboration with architects Chetwoods and structural engineers Hydrock. This high-specification quayside facility will become the new UK headquarters for specialist wood manufacturer Finsa UK, consolidating operations to drive their ambitious growth strategy. Designed with sustainability and innovation at its core, the development will bring lasting social and economic benefits to the Birkenhead community. The facility will comprise a 158,904 sq ft single-span warehouse with a 52m clear span, alongside a 5,000 sq ft two-storey CLT office, designed for maximum efficiency and sustainability. The development integrates photovoltaic panels, battery storage, and rainwater reuse systems, alongside electric machinery and sustainable timber, to reduce its environmental footprint. A full Cat B fit-out will deliver high-quality office, showroom, and trade counter spaces, while EV charging stations, landscaping, and enhanced surfacing will elevate functionality. The project will also create indirect jobs, apprenticeships, and opportunities for the local supply chain, supporting regional economic growth. Tom Kearsley, Operations Director at Glencar, commented: “This project represents an exciting opportunity to contribute to the transformative Wirral Waters regeneration scheme while showcasing our commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community investment. We are thrilled to be working with Peel Ports again and look forward to delivering a facility that supports Finsa UK’s growth while leaving a legacy in Birkenhead that extends far beyond construction.” Andrew Martin, Group Property Development Director at Peel Ports, commented: “Finsa UK has been a valued customer of Peel Ports for more than three decades, and we are delighted to see the next phase of their growth come to life with this transformative project at Grandidges Quay. We are excited to be collaborating once again with Glencar, whose expertise and commitment to excellence make them the ideal partner to deliver this high-specification logistics facility.” Raquel Carrillo, Managing Director at Finsa UK, added: “For more than 30 years, Birkenhead Port has been a key part of Finsa UK’s story. Our new headquarters represents an exciting new chapter in our future. We look forward to working closely with both teams to achieve this vision and to continue supporting and contributing to the growth of Birkenhead and its community.” Our team have recently started on site and the project is due for completion in winter 2025. |
