About This Project
Project Overview
Glencar has been appointed to deliver the replacement of the existing container yard at Maritime Europort in Wakefield. The project involves the demolition of outdated infrastructure and the installation of modern facilities designed to support Maritime’s expanding intermodal logistics operations.
The scheme will significantly enhance yard functionality, improve access control and strengthen site-wide security while maintaining continuity of operations within an active transport hub.
Glencar’s Role
Operating under a Design & Build contract, Glencar is responsible for managing demolition works, infrastructure upgrades, new building installations and associated external works, ensuring safe delivery within a live logistics environment.
Scope of Works
Demolition & Enabling
Demolition of the existing gatehouse, gantry, compressor/pump house and floodlighting infrastructure, alongside preparation works for the upgraded yard configuration.
New Infrastructure
Installation of a new gatehouse facility, new floodlighting columns, CCTV columns and associated security enhancements to improve operational oversight and site access control.
Yard Replacement
Comprehensive replacement and reconfiguration of the container yard to support heavy-duty operational requirements and high-volume intermodal movements.
Sustainability & ESG
The redevelopment focuses on modernising infrastructure to improve energy efficiency, operational performance and long-term durability. Upgraded lighting and site systems will support improved energy performance and enhanced security management.
Technical & Delivery Challenges
Working within a live container yard environment requires detailed sequencing, robust traffic management and close coordination with Maritime’s operational teams to minimise disruption and maintain programme certainty.
The Outcome
Upon completion, Maritime Wakefield will provide a modernised, secure and operationally efficient container yard, strengthening Maritime’s capacity at Europort and supporting continued growth in intermodal logistics across the region.
