Project Overview
Glencar delivered the comprehensive redevelopment and fit-out of IKEA’s new city centre store in Brighton, located within the former Debenhams building at the heart of the Brighton and Hove Shopping Centre.
The project forms part of IKEA’s urban strategy, creating smaller-format, centrally located stores designed to bring the brand closer to customers while enhancing accessibility and convenience.
Glencar’s Role
Glencar was responsible for extensive alterations, structural adaptations and the full internal fit-out of the multi-level building, delivering a modern, multi-use IKEA XS store within a live retail environment.
Scope of Works
Structural Alterations & Reconfiguration
Extensive modifications to the existing structure, including internal reconfiguration to accommodate the new store layout and operational requirements.
Retail & Customer Areas
Fit-out of the customer showroom and retail areas, creating a high-quality shopping environment aligned with IKEA’s brand and customer experience standards.
Back-of-House & Logistics
Delivery of operational spaces including logistics areas, storage and servicing facilities to support efficient store operations.
Staff & Amenity Spaces
Provision of staff facilities and café areas, supporting both employee wellbeing and customer experience.
Centre Interface Works
Refurbishment of shared facilities including main mall elevators and public toilets, undertaken in coordination with the shopping centre’s ongoing operations.
Sustainability & ESG
Sustainability was central to the project, with energy-efficient systems and materials incorporated throughout, supporting IKEA’s net zero and circularity ambitions.
Technical & Delivery Challenges
Delivering the scheme within a live retail environment required careful phasing, detailed logistics planning and close collaboration with centre management to maintain public access and minimise disruption.
The Outcome
The completed store provides IKEA with a modern, flexible urban retail destination, supporting its evolving strategy while enhancing accessibility and delivering a high-quality customer experience in a central location.
