About This Project
Project Overview
Glencar delivered the construction of a new vehicle maintenance facility at Wakehams Quarry, Plymouth, for National Grid. The scheme provides a dedicated operational base designed to support fleet servicing and maintenance activities, alongside associated external works and site infrastructure.
Located within an active quarry, the project required careful planning and close coordination with National Grid to ensure safe delivery while maintaining ongoing site operations.
Glencar’s Role
Glencar acted as main contractor, responsible for the full delivery of the building works, external works and the coordination of client-direct activities throughout the construction period.
Scope of Works
Building Construction
Delivery of a purpose-built vehicle maintenance facility incorporating workshop accommodation and supporting operational spaces tailored to National Grid’s requirements.
External Works & Infrastructure
Provision of associated external works including hardstandings, access routes and infrastructure to support vehicle movements and day-to-day operational use within the quarry environment.
Client Interface & Coordination
Ongoing coordination with National Grid’s operational teams and client-direct contractors to manage interfaces, sequencing and safe working within an active site.
Sustainability & ESG
The project was delivered with a focus on efficient resource use and responsible construction practices, minimising disruption within the operational quarry environment while supporting National Grid’s wider sustainability objectives.
Technical & Delivery Challenges
Delivering within a live quarry environment presented logistical and safety challenges. Robust traffic management, strict site controls and detailed planning were required to maintain programme certainty while ensuring safe integration with ongoing operational activities.
The Outcome
The completed facility provides National Grid with a modern, fit-for-purpose vehicle maintenance hub, strengthening operational resilience and supporting the long-term maintenance of critical energy infrastructure across the region.
